COURSE DESCRIPTION

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course reviews the concepts of pain management with the use of local anesthetic agents. Participants learn fundamental principles of pharmacology of anesthetic solutions, dosages, vasoconstrictors, drug interactions, neural physiology, anatomical features, medical history evaluation, contraindications of local anesthesia delivery, and management of adverse side effects including medical emergencies. Laboratory and clinical practice of local anesthesia basic injection techniques including block and infiltration.

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

Prior to beginning this course, participants must provide proof of:

  1. Oregon Dental Hygiene License OR an EFDA certification recognized for the State of Oregon
  2. BLS for Healthcare Providers certification or its equivalent
  3. Professional liability insurance

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

To successfully complete this course, the participant must:

  1. Participate in all lecture, lab, and clinical sessions
  2. Pass the lecture examination at 75% or above
  3. Demonstrate competency for each required injection


Course Hour Distribution:

  • Minimum of 65 total hours of education
    1. 35 hours lecture
    2. 15 hours laboratory
    3. 15 hours clinical

  • Do I need liability insurance?

    Professional Liability Insurance is required to participate in this course. Once registered participants gain a list of vetted companies. However, you may select an option that works for you. You can conduct a search using Professional Dental Liability Insurance and select the appropriate designation.

  • Where can I find the textbooks?

    The required textbooks are LOCAL ANESTHESIA FOR THE DENTAL PROFESSIONALS: Revised 2nd edition. By Kathy Bassett. Also, HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT: LOCAL ANESTHESIA RESOURCE GUIDE. There are links for these within the course modules. Visible once registered for the course.

  • Will I need to get injections?

    Yes, all participants must be willing and able to give and receive plain local anesthetic drug agents.

  • How long does it take to complete the course?

    It is encouraged to allow 6-8 weeks to complete the lecture and lab portions of the course. These must be successfully completed prior to attending the hands-on portion.

The full cost of the course is $2200 this includes all course fees. The student will need to obtain instructional (textbook) material and liability insurance. This can range to an additional $100-$150.
